Written Evidence to the Justice Committee on the Criminal Justice (Sentencing etc) Bill
Resources: Submissions and briefings
The Equality Coalition has responded to the Justice Committee’s call for evidence on the Criminal Justice (Sentencing etc.) Bill. This evidence advocates for the amendment of Part 6 of the Sentencing Bill to include a misogyny aggravator based on the Scottish model. The addition of a misogyny aggravator is needed to address the acute levels of misogynistic violence against women and girls in NI, and our recommendation is made in the knowledge that the inclusion of such a provision has already been consulted on twice. Additionally, the Sentencing Bill adopts an aggravated offences model, whereby existing criminal offences are aggravated by hostility on specified protected grounds. It would therefore appear straightforward for the addition of a misogyny aggravator to fall within the ambit of the Sentencing Bill.
